1 . 3 . The relation o f realization i s a many-to-many relation, on account o f what is called asymmetrical dualism. So there exist sentences that are homony mous or synonymous at different levels. Moreover, it is possible, for example , that a single proposition has two different representations on the pheno grammatical level or on that of morphemics, and both are realized by the same phonetic means - cf. English The jury came in (corresponding either to The jury is coming in or to The jury are coming in) so that there is synonymy above homonymy.
1 . 1 and which are only a matter of the extra-linguistic content : in a sentence such as He lived a rich life the "inner object" itself (its head) does not add any new informa tion to that conveyed by the verb, but it is far from clear whether this fact should be provided for by distinguishing this type of relationship between the verb and the noun as a special syntactic relation ; perhaps it is only a matter of semantic coincidence of two lexical units. Another similar question is that of "types of goal" as to their being changed, caused, destroyed, etc.
The comments below) ; (d) the set of complex units that are not only well formed, but also "actual," that is, which occur in representations of grammatical sentences (point (a) of the assumption from Section 1 . 4 concerns these actual units) ; (e) a partition of the set of elementary units, corresponding to the differ ences in their position as to the relations of type C (cf. for instance the above mentioned partition of tagmemes into lexical tagmemes, suffixes and sentence parts, or into more specific subsets ; or the similar partition of semantemes) ; (f) a specification of the representation of the sentence on the given level ; the representation of the sentence is a complex unit on each of the two highest levels (cf.
