Some masters kept an eye on the quarters, in which case slaves would steal away to the woods when they could to worship as they saw fit. Here, in isolation, the African traditions of dance, drumming, song, and praise held sway.

His plan might have been to sell at least some of his slaves in Texas and to use that income to make a new start. When the Owens family got word that the Smiths would soon move to Texas, they acted to stop it. With the help of sympathetic whites and the county sheriff, the Owens family was able to block the Smiths’ departure until the legal status of their slaves could be ascertained.
